We Have Got To Do Better

Let me start by saying R.I.P. Derrion Albert.

(moment of silence)

I remember the first time I heard this story being covered by CNN over the weekend. The first thing that came to my head was "Here we go again. Blacks killing blacks. When will it stop" As the story continued to unfold I began to sense a trouble in my spirit. It was almost like my soul could not rest!

I took it upon myself to find the video on YouTube and watch it in its entirety. Immediately I felt sick. I almost throw up right there where I sat. Such chaos & violence. Then I thought "Look at my people. Why....Why?" My eyes became heavy & a list of emotions took over me. Rage, hurt, sadness, confusion, gratitude, bitterness, anger, the list goes on. I watch several men beat Derrion (who was already defenseless on the ground) to death. One even jumped over him & stomp on his head. Another struck him over the head with a board used for railroads. Complete disbelief. That is no way for anyone to die. No one should suffer that way.

Derrion Albert was an honor roll student, an athlete, & a christian. His destiny was selfishly stripped away from him. What would he have grown up to be? We will never know.

Today I had a conversation with a friend about the people (our people) who did this. We began to talk about solutions & what we as a community need to do to ensure that this never happens again He brought up a good point during the convo. He stated "What they lack is love, a family & a place to belong. Thats why performing something like this is easy. They don't have any other option." The word "OPTION" stood out to me. Then it hit me. The reason I could never do anything like that is because I had options. The options of LOVE, EDUCATION, CREATIVITY, FAMILY, FRIENDS, CHRIST ....ect. Many would believe these same options are given to them just like the rest of us. But is it truly?

I grow up in an hostile environment. I can say from first hand experience its NOT. Thank GOD I had a family who said that my generation would be the LAST to stay in that situation. So I was forced to attend school outside of my district. Out side of my district is where I was given OPTIONS. I strongly believe that we need to bring those same options back to those forgotten & left behind.

The only time we shine should not only be through music, sports or when we are killing each other. Those of us who have seen the light need to open the eyes of those who have yet to see. Lets take the responsibility upon ourselves to give our community more OPTIONS!

I've been repeating then line in my head since the first time I heard it. If I was asked to describe my swag by a single sentence it would be that line. Jay-Z has a way of making you feel like you live through his words. A good pair of shoes will make you feel like you can make the ground you walk on come to life.

I've always considered myself a bit of a "tom boy". What

can I say I'm a tough chick! :) But I must say, as grow more & more into being a woman, things around me began to change. I grow into things & out of things. Lately i've been growing into something I never though I would.......SHOES!!!!!

But not just any pair of shoes. These are special. They are Christian Louboutin's. Yes the shoes with the RED bottoms (as I like to call them) lol! Louboutin's are from paris & each show is stamped with a signature RED bottom sole.

I can't take my eyes off of them & soon enough my hands will be all over them. They are the definition of a woman's DREAM...... the PERFECT SHOE!!! Although they may be a little pricey, I must say they are worth the money. I consider them classy & stylish with loads of swag.

I've placed the Jay-Z video "I Know" below. The sentence about the shoes are in the first line of the second verse. This song gives my the same feeling I get when I'm lusting after theses beautiful shoes! :)

Every day I wake up a realize more about me. For the 23yrs I've walked the earth & have been through war, but GOD has always led me back home to my resting place. Through it all one thing stays constant. MY STRENGTH!!!

I look around & notice that same strength displayed in the women around me. More & more it inspires me to wake up everyday, put on my Superhero get up & save the world. Not because of any goodness of my own, but because I know their are millions of women just like me who wake up every morning who do the same thing.

I like to call us "Modern Day Superheroes" better known as the "SUPERWOMAN" We are doctors, musicians, lawyers, accountants, artist & students. We have the strength of a wrestler, but the poise & grace of a First Lady. The style & swag of a Model, but the intelligence of a Scientist. Strong enough to be a man, but made a WOMAN!
